Jetta hissing sounds, turbo related? [May. 8th, 2008|08:50 pm]
Biodiesel in California

Just wanted to get people's opinions on this problem I'm having with my 2001 Jetta TDI with 120,000 miles and running B100, and to see if the price I was quoted to have it fixed sounds like it's in line.

My Jetta emits this loud "hissing" sound when I accelerate up a hill, and it sounds like it's tied into the turbocharger. I don't seem to have any loss of power, and my mileage hasn't changed, but occasionally my Jetta goes into "limp mode" where the turbocharger stops running and I can barely crawl home at 40-50 MPH.

I took it to a mechanic, and he could find no codes on his VAG-COM computer, but he said that the "turbo actuator" has gone bad and only moves a fraction of an inch where the linkage should move more like a couple inches. So he's saying that my Jetta's overboosting, and the hissing sound I hear is the extra pressure escaping. He quoted me $580 for a new actuator, and $400 for the labor to install.

Does this sound par for the course? Anyone have any opinions?
